DoE and ESDO Host Fair and Seminar to Promote Alternatives to Polythene Bags

On September 26, 2024, the Department of Environment (DoE), in collaboration with ESDO proudly hosted the Polythene Bag Alternative Products Fair at DoE Auditorium, showcasing innovative, eco-friendly alternatives to harmful Polythene Bags like jute, cloth, and other biodegradable options. The event was a hub where entrepreneurs and buyers connected to explore sustainable solutions for a greener future. This is a key part of our efforts to combat plastic pollution and promote responsible consumption!

To continue this important conversation, on September 29, 2024, a seminar on “Alternative Products of Polythene” took place at the DoE Conference Room. Distinguished speakers, including Md. Arifur Rahman Bhuiyan, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Environmental Science, BUP shared insightful presentations on the environmental and health impacts of polybags. The Jute Product Diversification Centre also presented solutions for replacing plastic with sustainable jute products.

During the panel discussions, Dr. Shahriar Hossain, Secretary General, ESDO, and Mr. Muhammad Helal Uddin, President, Bangladesh Dokan Malik Somiti emphasized the importance of transitioning away from polythene while offering support to SMEs and ensuring alternative livelihoods for those involved in polythene production.

The open discussion was moderated by, Dr. Abdul Hamid, Director General, DoE. Dr. Farhina Ahmed, Secretary of MoEFCC, joined the session as a Special Guest and the chief guest of the seminar was Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Honorable Advisor of MoEFCC.

Key takeaways from the seminar included the government’s zero-tolerance strategy to enforce the ban on polythene bags, market monitoring starting from November 1, 2024, and educating consumers to make sustainable choices. It’s vital that we reduce the price of raw materials for alternatives and provide policy support to SMEs.
