Bangladesh’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) is actively addressing the plastic crisis amid the ongoing fourth Session of the International Negotiation Committee meeting for the Global Plastic Treaty. On April 27, 2024, Dr. Fahmida Khanom, Additional Secretary of MoEFCC, led a visit to ESDO’s zero waste village in Rangpur. The government’s recognition of ESDO’s initiative to build zero-waste, plastic-free villages underscores its commitment to sustainability.

During the visit, Dr. Fahmida Khanom observed waste segregation, organic composting, and biogas processing firsthand, showcasing effective community-driven solutions. Following the visit, a yard meeting convened by the Department of Environment, in collaboration with ESDO, highlighted the challenge of managing single-use plastic waste.

Villagers suggested a centralized collection system, supported by the government, with an emphasis on separating reusable and single-use plastics. The subsequent meeting at the Betgari Union Parishad Office saw the participation of key stakeholders, including government officials, local leaders, and representatives from PRISM Bangladesh Foundation and the ESDO team. Throughout these initiatives, the proactive approach of Bangladesh at both local and international levels demonstrates its dedication to combating plastic pollution and building a sustainable future for all.
